What skills are needed in Digital Marketing?

As discussed in our previous post, digital marketing encompasses marketing activities via the internet and electronic devices. The skills necessary to perform these tasks, involve understanding the customer’s journey utilizing web content and paid advertising. As a digital marketer you need to be able to meet your customers wherever they are in their buying journey. Some of these skills include but aren’t limited to: 

  • Understand how to use analytical software
  • Project management
  • Industry research
  • Staying up-to-date on digital marketing trends
  • Measure and track your KPIs
  • Generate reports on your metrics
  • Content creation (blogs, social media posts, and email marketing)
  • Strong understanding of SEO
    • Google Analytics
    • Keyword Research
    • SEM (Search Engine Marketing)
    • SERP (Search Engine Results Pages)
  • Developing & implementing an online marketing strategy
  • Training, Leadership, & Presenting
  • Budgeting, Forecast Planning, and Paid Campaign Management
  • Community Management and Client Service


What should my resume/portfolio look like?

 We see this question a lot and it’s important to note that all resumes don’t have to look the same, they shouldn’t look the same actually. But what your resume and portfolio should exhibit, are some of the skills listed above. Recruiters are also wanting samples of your work so they can see that you are capable of creating campaigns and measuring their KPIs. The next career option is The Social Media Manager/Community Manager. I’m sure you’ve seen these two terms used when searching for jobs, let’s look at what they’re responsibilities are.


  • Manages the social channels for which the content is created for (works closely with the content marketer if there’s a team).
  • Might also create the content too, if this is a contract/freelance position. Some companies can only budget for one position, so be prepared for this task too.
  • Develops strategies for which social channels to have and which ones are best to post the content on.
  • Responsible for running analytic reports on metrics for measuring KPIs
  • Engages with your online community by responding to Direct Messages, Tweets, comments, etc.
  • Manages social ad campaigns along with the content marketer.

In order to be successful in this career path, you need to be excellent at working with deadlines, scheduling software and knowing how to manage multiple accounts confidently, this goes for freelancers too! Starting out as a freelance social media manager is a great way to get started in this industry, if you eventually want to work with an agency or an industry specific company.


Now let’s get into The Email Marketer, this career option mainly deals with the email marketing and automation side of a business. They are responsible for the following:


  • Creating the copy and design for emails
  • Working closely with the content creator for the copy and design of the emails (if there is a team)
  • Manages and tracks email open/click rates via the email platform used
  • Segments the subscriber lists based on the needs of the company
  • Creating an automation funnel system to send the appropriate emails to their lists.
  • Understands and implements A/B testing confidently

Having a strong background in copywriting is pertinent for this position as you will be sharing company messages and news to your subscribers.  When sharing these messages, you’ll also want to know which ones to automate too, such as “Welcome” emails for new customer or member sign-ups. Lastly, you will more than likely be responsible for setting up an email sequence if there isn’t one already set up. You would then need to manage and keep track of each email campaign.

Although there are numerous niche positions in digital marketing, understanding how these 3 core positions work will give you the insight of where you’d want to start your career journey. Some other roles that you’ll need many of these same sections within the resume include social media influencer, editor in chief, product managers, and career coaches.
